Herd Visit Reports

Angus Acres
Over the last 10 years or so we have had the privilege of marketing cattle and embryos for Angus Acres. This historic Angus operation operates under the astute direction of Blaine Shoemaker on the family’s farm at Aledo, IL. In my recent visit to view their most recent production, Blaine announced his intent to disperse this incredible herd in its entirety. This important Angus event will take place at the upcoming Midwest Connection Sale on December 18th, 2016 at Bloomfield Livestock, Bloomfield, IA.

Blaine Shoemaker has had a professional career that has been closely tied to the beef industry. His background led him to favor cattle with the performance and carcass trait attributes that have led Angus cattle to the top. His intimate knowledge and appropriate since of direction have led to a small but select herd with pedigrees stacked with elite AI genetics. Every female in the offering (other than the 2016 heifers) will be AI bred, some of those will be spring pairs and others will be donor cows that sell with well-thought embryo matings.

Several herd sire prospects were held over from last year for the offering including AA Power Tool Supreme, a coming 2-year-old son of Power Tool out of a Ten X dam back to Sitz Upward. He ranks in the top 10% or better for WW, YW, Milk, Marb, $W, $F,$G and $QG. He records a “buck and change” on his marbling EPD. This strong aged bull is ready to go to work for fall calving operations. I also grabbed a snap shot of AA Mercer Barbara 1240 in her working clothes. This gorgeous daughter of EXT is an ET daughter of the $11,000 Summitcrest Barbara 1L70, the Angus Acres donor dam and maternal sister to the $125,000 Stevenson Basin herdsire, Summitcrest Prime Cut 1G42. This cow sells, as does her 2016 bull calf by EXAR Denver 2002B.

Remember to mark December 18th on your calendar this important day in Angus history will include a plethora of elite Angus genetics from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and beyond. Contact Livestock HUB to get your name on the catalog list.

Marks Family Purebreds
I recently the opportunity to stop and visit Marks Family Purebreds at New Hartford, Iowa. I would encourage any progressive Angus or commercial producer to do the same. This is an aggressive seedstock operation focused on production, performance and carcass traits that will add value to a calf crop. An excellent set of young bulls is being developed for your consideration next spring. The Marks’ will also have another outstanding set of heifers in the National Western Foundation Female Sale as well as a tremendous herd sire prospect in the Denver bull sale.

I took a few snapshots in the pasture tour, and I’m convinced this herd is a must-see and certain to be a force in the future. These are just a few highlights from the animals that stopped temporarily for a photo opp.
  • First off is tremendous bred heifer that is indicative of powerful replacements going back into the breeding program. “5102” is a Consensus 7229 daughter from a Sitz Upward 307R dam that is a direct daughter of the C&H Ever Entense 4070 donor made famous in the LHR herd in KS.
  • “G341” is a third generation Pathfinder® cow and daughter of TC Friction originating in the Hoover Angus herd in Iowa. She has seven calves with a calving interval of 357 days and a 102 nursing ratio.
  • The “1812” cow is also a granddaughter of C&H Ever Entense 4070 by TC Aberdeen 759. She was a standout in the LHR calf crop with a BWR 98, WWR 114, YWR 108, IMF 140 and RE 108. She currently has three calves on record with a calving interval 354 days, BR 3@93, NR 3@102 and YR 2@102.
  • Finally, the “3261” herd sire is a phenomenal son of Consensus 7229 out of a B/R Future Direction 4268 dam back to “Objective”. He is an embryo transplant bull with exceptional carcass credentials posting an IMF ratio of 171 and RE ratio of 114. His enviable EPD profile culminates with a +150 $B.
